How the gold rate is calculated

Gold trades on global markets in a single, universal unit: US dollars per troy ounce (one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams). Every local gold rate you see — whether in Karachi, Delhi, Dubai, or London — starts from this one international price, known by its ticker XAUUSD. To turn it into a local rate, three things are applied: the currency exchange rate, the weight unit you want (gram, tola, or 10 grams), and the purity (karat) of the gold.

That is exactly what the calculator above does, live. It takes the current international price, converts it to your currency using the rate you set, and breaks it down by weight and karat. Because it is driven by the real market price, it moves throughout the day just as the actual gold market does.

Tola, gram, and 10 grams — which is used where?

Different regions quote gold in different units, which is why the same metal can seem to have many "prices":

24K vs 22K vs 21K vs 18K — what the karat means

Karat (K) measures purity. 24K is essentially pure gold (99.9%), used for bars, coins, and investment. 22K (91.7%) and 21K (87.5%) are the most common for jewellery in South Asia and the Gulf because the added alloy makes the piece more durable. 18K (75%) is popular for modern and Western jewellery. Since lower-karat gold contains less pure metal, its rate per gram or tola is proportionally lower — which is why the table above shows different figures for each purity.

Why your local jeweller's rate may differ

The figures here reflect the pure metal value from the live global market. The price you actually pay at a shop usually adds several local factors: import duty and taxes, the jeweller's making charges (labour), and a dealer premium. It can also lag the international price slightly, since many shops update once or twice a day. Use this page to know the fair underlying metal value before you buy or sell — it is your best defence against overpaying.
